Norris Expected Monaco Struggles as McLaren Qualifies Poorly

Lando Norris warned his McLaren team expected a difficult Monaco weekend, and his prediction proved accurate as both cars struggled to match the pace of front-runners. The MCL40's mysterious electrical issues forced overnight repairs after FP2, while persistent front-end problems left drivers lacking confidence around the tight street circuit.

Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri could manage only the fourth row, over half a second off Andrea Kimi Antonelli's pole-sitting Mercedes. Despite team principal Andrea Stella claiming the car performs well in slow corners, Norris's assessment differed sharply - describing it as difficult to drive and unforgiving. His confidence rating dropped from 100 to 85 compared to last season.

The team tested new front wing components in Montreal but abandoned them after inconclusive results. Norris suggested the fundamental issue lies with front-end grip and locking, not tires or setup combinations. While he might have left small time on the table through minor errors, the car simply lacks the raw pace to compete at the front.

These qualifying struggles raise serious questions about McLaren's championship defense after Norris's title-winning 2025 campaign. The gap to Mercedes and Red Bull suggests technical development hasn't kept pace with rivals, potentially derailing their season before it gains momentum.
