Newey returns to Aston Martin for Monaco GP

Adrian Newey will reappear in the Formula 1 paddock at the Monaco GP after missing the opening Australian round. The 62‑year‑old, responsible for 14 driver titles, took on the Aston Martin team‑principal role last season while retaining an equity stake for the team. His absence followed a high‑profile press tour in Melbourne where he disclosed the Honda‑powered AMR26’s development woes.

Team chief Mike Krack confirmed Newey’s arrival on Thursday evening, stressing the value of his experience on the tight street circuit. Aston Martin has delayed major aerodynamic upgrades until summer, leaving Newey to focus on extracting performance from the current package. Honda’s engineers are still tweaking torque delivery, a problem highlighted after the Miami race and still evident in Monaco’s low‑speed corners.

Newey’s presence may help the team fine‑tune the AMR26’s gearbox and engine balance, issues that have cost podium chances this year. Rumours of Jonathan Wheatley moving from Audi to replace him persist, but Aston Martin reiterated that Newey will attend selected rounds only. His brief Monaco stint will therefore be a practical test of the car’s street‑track readiness.
