Mercedes tackles start woes as Antonelli eyes clean launch

Mercedes supplies the quickest chassis on the 2024 grid, yet its cars have repeatedly botched the launch. Kimi Antonelli secured pole for the first three races and led the China sprint, while George Russell added a pole in the opening round. In Miami the sprint saw Antonelli drop from second to fourth, then incur track‑limits penalties that relegated him to sixth at the finish.

Team principal Toto Wolff called the pattern 'not acceptable' after the Miami race and promised a overhaul. Antonelli revealed a new clutch paddle and revised software mapping will debut in Canada, aimed at stabilising bite point and power delivery. McLaren, also powered by a Mercedes unit but with its own gearbox, has been posting cleaner launches, highlighting a gap Mercedes must close.

With a clear pace advantage, Mercedes cannot afford lost positions that hand points to rivals. Each compromised start threatens Antonelli’s bid to translate pole advantage into race victories and could tighten the drivers’ leaderboard. The upcoming Canadian Grand Prix will be the first real test of the new start package, and a clean launch will be the decisive metric.
