Mercedes Rejects Fav‑orism Rumours Amid Russell‑Antonelli Duel

Mercedes technical director James Allison slammed rumours that the team favours one driver in the championship fight. In the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show, he dismissed the notion as “alien” and reminded listeners that Mercedes values both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli for constructors points, not individual glory, for the title race.

After the Barcelona GP, where Russell and Antonelli collided on track, giving Lewis Hamilton an opening, Toto Wolff confirmed the team will only issue orders if a rival threatens them. The clash left Hamilton to dominate Ferrari, while Mercedes stuck to its policy of equal treatment, keeping both drivers in the hunt for the title race.

Allison stressed that the team’s main prize is the constructors’ championship, where Mercedes sits 72‑point ahead of Ferrari. He said that a single driver’s chances matter only if one cannot mathematically win. Until then, Russell and Antonelli must push hard, as the team’s bonus depends on collective points for the season. Mercedes will keep both drivers in the fight.

With Antonelli leading the standings by 41 points over Hamilton and Russell nine behind, Mercedes faces no pressure to split the field. The team’s focus remains on maximizing points each race, ensuring its 72‑point lead stays safe while the drivers battle for the title in a season that has already seen intense rivalries. Mercedes will keep its strategy clear and its drivers focused on results.
