McLaren Ditches New Front Wing After Single Practice Session in Canada

McLaren's highly anticipated front wing upgrade lasted just one practice session before the team abandoned it. The new component formed the centerpiece of their second-phase Miami upgrade package for the Canadian Grand Prix, but both drivers reported discomfort during FP1.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri switched to the previous specification before sprint qualifying. Norris admitted the car felt off-pace initially, while Piastri confirmed the older wing provided more confidence to attack the demanding kerbs at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The aggressive nature of the Montreal circuit exposed the wing's shortcomings.

Technical director Neil Houldey stated the rest of the upgrade package is delivering expected gains, but the front wing needs further development. Both drivers and engineers agreed the component requires additional work to unlock its potential.

McLaren will reassess the front wing at Barcelona, where more representative track conditions should provide clearer feedback on whether the issues are circuit-specific or fundamental to the design.
