Hamilton's British GP woes traced to setup error

Lewis Hamilton's challenging British Grand Prix weekend stemmed from a pre-race setup adjustment that introduced significant understeer, according to Autosport F1 News. Initially surprising with a pole position for the sprint race, Hamilton ultimately finished third in the Grand Prix behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Leclerc's victory was aided by a strong start and a 10-second gap he built over Hamilton.

Hamilton explained that after Ferrari's initial deficit projections, the car's balance shifted dramatically. While Leclerc added front wing load, Hamilton opted to reduce it, hoping to stabilize the rear. This adjustment, however, led to a severe lack of front-end grip, hindering his ability to turn the car through corners. He admitted the setup change was his and the engineering team's responsibility.

This understeer condition also exacerbated tire wear, a phenomenon Pirelli had cautioned against, noting it stresses the front tires without generating sufficient temperature. Despite attempting to mitigate the issue through in-car adjustments, the initial deficit proved too large to overcome, leading to a race marred by persistent problems for the seven-time world champion.
