Mercedes driver George Russell has urged patience regarding Formula 1's controversial 2026 regulations, arguing it's too early to judge the new cars after initial testing in Bahrain. While Max Verstappen slammed the rules as 'anti-racing' and 'Formula E on steroids,' Russell believes teams need time to adapt to the complex hybrid systems that derive half their power from electric motors.

Russell acknowledged the unusual driving techniques required, including excessive lifting and coasting on straights and maintaining high revs in corners to harvest energy. However, he emphasized the positive aspects of lighter, smaller, and more nimble cars compared to previous generations. 'I do think it's a step forward and I always like to give things a chance,' Russell stated, noting the three-year development cycle ahead.

The British driver pointed out that current testing at Barcelona and Bahrain represents the easiest conditions for the new power units. He warned that circuits like Melbourne and Jeddah will present much greater challenges for engine management. Russell also highlighted the broader context of attracting manufacturers like Audi and Honda to F1, suggesting the regulations serve a strategic purpose beyond pure racing performance.
