F1 super clipping emerges as 2026 regulation solution

McLaren tested super clipping at full 350kW limit during Bahrain winter testing, allowing 2026 cars to harvest energy while drivers maintain full throttle. Team principal Andrea Stella advocated for increasing the current 250kW limit, seeing it as a potential solution if opening races prove problematic with energy management.

Super clipping visibly affects performance in high-speed corners like Turn 12, where telemetry shows drivers can lose up to 20kph despite being at full throttle. This explains Fernando Alonso's comment that a chef could drive the 2026 cars in such sections, with speed profiles differing dramatically despite nearly identical lap times.

The FIA remains cautious about implementing changes before assessing the opening races. Single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis acknowledged both reducing electrical power in race trim and increasing super clipping harvesting could be options, but stressed the governing body wants to avoid hasty decisions before the first real race tests.
