Alpine fights Monaco penalty, verdict due Friday

Pierre Gasly and Alpine will not hear the verdict on their right‑of‑review until Friday in Barcelona. The team appealed the two five‑second penalties handed to the Frenchman for pit‑lane speeding, penalties that knocked him from third to seventh at Monaco and erased a podium finish. Alpine lodged the challenge after the FIA’s data suggested a timing error.

The FIA stewards deemed Alpine’s request admissible after the squad produced new evidence: telemetry from F1 management confirming the pit‑lane speed‑measuring system overestimated Gasly’s velocity. A video conference with Alpine, the stewards and most other teams examined the data and concluded the sensor was inaccurate. The hearing began Thursday afternoon, but the panel will not release a decision until Friday morning.

Gasly called the demotion the toughest moment of his career, watching Isack Hadjar celebrate on the iconic Monaco podium. He refused further comment until the hearing concludes, noting the team and lawyers have worked “hard” on the case. Regardless of outcome, the Frenchman remains proud of his performance in a race that reshaped the early season order. It could affect his championship points tally.
