Alonso Slams F1 Rules: Lost Decade of Pure Racing

Formula 1 plans a 60-40 split favoring the internal combustion engine for 2026, shifting from current hybrid ratios. Fernando Alonso dismisses the change as insufficient, arguing the power unit DNA still rewards slow cornering over genuine racing. He contends the regulation evolution misunderstands what makes motorsport exciting.

Alonso distinguishes between real overtaking and what he calls "avoiding action." He explains that battery advantages allow easy passes on straights, stripping the skill from wheel-to-wheel combat. This, he says, degrades the on-track product despite increased passing numbers.

While welcoming Max Verstappen's Nurburgring 24 Hours outing as eye-opening for fans, Alonso does not see it as a critique of F1. He views other series as equally magical and believes top drivers exploring them broadens fan horizons. The Spaniard maintains F1's current formula has sacrificed a decade of authentic competition for technological trends.
