Frances Tiafoe defeated Alex Michelsen in a dramatic US Open quarterfinal that ended with an emotional embrace at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Michelsen, 22, was playing in his first Grand Slam quarterfinal and was a few points from victory after taking the first two sets. The No. 11-seeded Tiafoe battled back to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6), completing his turnaround after Michelsen failed to serve out the match with a 5-4 lead in the third set.

After the match, Tiafoe held Michelsen in a long embrace while the young American sobbed on his shoulder. "I really like Alex," Tiafoe said. "I just wanted to come up there and just dap him up." Michelsen said he didn't speak much at the net but appreciated Tiafoe's kind words about future meetings.

"I don't think anyone else could have made me cry in that moment," Michelsen said. Jessica Pegula, who watched the end before her own quarterfinal win over Emma Navarro, said seeing the moment made her cry too. Tiafoe, 28, praised Michelsen's performance, saying he easily could have won the match.
