An FDE embeds inside a company’s operations to make AI models or optimisation algorithms work in messy real‑world environments, especially in supply chains. I learned this the hard way when I became a Supply Chain Data Scientist for a fashion retailer.

The retailer, based in Milan, faced a complex chain: luxury bags shipped from a Milan warehouse, through trucks, airports, and customs, to stores in Shanghai. Multiple teams use ERP, WMS, and TMS systems that lack harmonised data, making on‑time delivery analysis a 18‑month project. The FDE’s role is not just technical; it involves reading undocumented systems, aligning team definitions, and letting users test the tool before trust is earned.

In this project, I built an AI‑powered distribution‑chain monitoring tool that uses the Claude agent.
