OpenAI has banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts involved in a covert influence operation targeting the Ghanaian presidential election. The operation generated content supporting Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and criticizing former President John Mahama.

The activity was centered around a website, Empoweringghana[.]com, linked to a commercial entity named Digit Sol, with offices in the UAE and Ghana. The operation utilized ChatGPT to produce articles for the website and numerous social media posts across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, and WhatsApp. They also used ChatGPT to generate short comments, often in sets of 30, to inflate engagement on their own posts, suggesting artificial amplification rather than genuine interaction.

OpenAI assessed the operation's impact using the Breakout Scale, rating it as Category 2 (activity on multiple platforms, but no evidence of widespread sharing by real people). The website and social media accounts ceased posting shortly after the election on December 8, 2024. The investigation aimed to mitigate foreign influence and maintain platform integrity.
