OpenAI has announced its co-organization of two major competitions for the NeurIPS 2020 conference, in collaboration with AIcrowd, Carnegie Mellon University, and DeepMind. These events are designed to push the boundaries of artificial general intelligence (AGI) research by focusing on two distinct, challenging environments: the Procgen Benchmark and MineRL. The Procgen competition challenges researchers to develop algorithms that can generalize efficiently across a vast array of procedurally generated game levels, a key step towards creating robust and adaptable AI systems.

The MineRL competition, conversely, leverages the complex open-world of Minecraft to foster research in sample-efficient reinforcement learning, encouraging participants to learn from limited human demonstration data rather than massive trial-and-error. This collaborative effort between leading AI labs and academic institutions is critical for the industry. By standardizing benchmarks and creating a competitive, open forum, these competitions accelerate the development of more generalizable and data-efficient AI models, moving the field beyond narrow, over-fitted solutions and closer to versatile, real-world applications.
