ChatGPT Adoption Deepens Globally as Usage Doubles Across Regions

OpenAI's latest Signals data reveals that ChatGPT adoption is expanding both geographically and in user engagement. Users who have been on the platform for six months now send 50% more messages daily and have doubled their distinct task usage compared to their initial experience. This deepening behavior shows people are integrating the AI tool into regular workflows rather than treating it as a novelty.

The analysis, based on a 0.1% sample of accounts created between October 2025 and May 2026, tracks how users explore ChatGPT's 53 capability categories over time. Africa and Asia lead regional growth, while lower Human Development Index countries show the fastest relative increases in weekly active users since July 2023. This suggests AI adoption is reaching emerging markets where cost barriers matter most.

Language diversity mirrors geographic expansion. Non-English users now comprise over half of all active ChatGPT users, with Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic leading adoption. Countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Poland show higher usage from users with typically-feminine names, indicating broader demographic reach. Uzbek, Kazakh, and Burmese users demonstrated the largest percentage growth in their share of active users.

OpenAI's tiered pricing strategy—from free access to premium subscriptions—appears to be working as intended. The data provides policymakers and researchers with concrete evidence of how AI tools penetrate different socioeconomic layers, moving beyond early adopters in developed nations to become genuinely global utilities.
