A struggling geothermal power plant in New Mexico, Lightning Dock, has been revived by Zanskar, a company that purchased the facility in June 2024. The plant's original wells, operating since 2013, suffered from a significant temperature drop of 50 °F over five years, rendering it uneconomical.

Using advanced modeling, Zanskar identified that the original, shallow wells (around 2,500 feet) were not optimally positioned within the reservoir. They drilled a new, deeper well reaching 8,000 feet in a different location. This new well, operational since May 2025, is flowing at over 4,000 gallons per minute and has restored the plant to full capacity, generating twice the electricity compared to the old wells.

This success at the 15-megawatt Lightning Dock plant suggests untapped potential in conventional geothermal resources. Zanskar's findings indicate that deeper drilling can significantly improve flow and efficiency, potentially changing how hydrothermal assets are viewed and developed across the US. The company plans further development at the site to increase output.
