Wyden Warns: Secret NSA Surveillance Will Shock Americans

Senator Ron Wyden has sounded his familiar alarm about Section 702 surveillance, warning that a secret government interpretation will eventually shock the American public. Speaking on the Senate floor, Wyden said he's been asking multiple administrations to declassify this matter for years, but they've all refused. He believes Congress needs to debate this openly before the upcoming reauthorization deadline.

This isn't Wyden's first warning about hidden surveillance powers. In 2011, he predicted secret PATRIOT Act interpretations that later proved true when Snowden revelations exposed bulk collection of Americans' phone metadata. Now he's applying the same pattern to Section 702, which is set for renewal. Wyden says the government is relying on secret law regarding this authority, and Americans have the right to be confused and angry about how this business is conducted.

Adding to the concern, Wyden highlighted how supposed reforms have failed spectacularly. The requirement for FBI Deputy Director approval of sensitive searches ended up in the hands of conspiracy theorist Dan Bongino, followed by election denier Andrew Bailey. The FBI has even refused to track these searches in a simple spreadsheet. With Congress weeks away from a reauthorization vote, Wyden warns that opponents will try to rush through a bill without real debate, using the same playbook they've run for 15 years.
