A Waymo self-driving vehicle blocked an Austin-Travis County EMS ambulance during the chaotic aftermath of a deadly mass shooting in Austin early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at Buford's Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, where three people died including the gunman and dozens more were injured.

Video captured by Austin realtor Matthew Turnage went viral, showing the Waymo stuck in the middle of the street attempting a U-turn while the ambulance waited behind it. The self-driving car froze at the most inopportune moment, forcing the EMS vehicle to reverse down the street to find an alternate route. An Austin Police Department officer eventually entered the Waymo and drove it out of the road after more than a minute of delay.

This incident adds to growing criticism of Waymo's autonomous vehicles in Austin, where they've previously caused traffic jams and other disruptions. The company faces questions about whether its vehicles can properly detect and respond to emergency vehicles. Waymo officials expressed sadness about the tragedy but have not detailed specific measures to improve emergency vehicle detection. The deadly shooting remains under investigation by the FBI and Austin Police Department.
