Universal Vaccine Could End Winter Colds and Flus

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a nasal spray vaccine that could protect against all respiratory infections, including colds, flus, and bacterial lung infections. Unlike traditional vaccines that target specific pathogens, this universal vaccine mimics immune cell communication to keep white blood cells in the lungs on high alert. The approach represents a radical departure from Edward Jenner's 18th-century vaccine design.

In animal experiments, the vaccine reduced viral penetration by 100-to-1,000-fold and protected against _Staphylococcus aureus_ and _Acinetobacter baumannii_ bacteria. The effect lasted approximately three months, with the immune system primed to respond to any infection that breaches the lungs. The researchers also observed reduced allergic responses to house dust mite allergens, suggesting potential benefits for asthma sufferers.

The vaccine's broad protection could be particularly valuable during pandemic onset or seasonal outbreaks when time is critical. Rather than replacing existing vaccines, the team envisions it as a complementary tool to provide immediate protection while specific vaccines are developed. The researchers plan human trials where vaccinated individuals would be deliberately exposed to infections to test efficacy.
