Timescale has launched pg_textsearch, a PostgreSQL extension delivering BM25 relevance-ranked full-text search. This solves a critical gap in core Postgres, offering a free alternative to the AGPL-licensed ParadeDB extension. The project emerged from Tiger Data's need for a scalable hybrid search stack, initially deemed a six-to-twelve-month undertaking.

TJ solo-executed the development using modern tools like Claude Code and Opus, completing it in two quarters instead of the anticipated team effort. The extension now provides 4.7x query throughput advantage over leading commercial solutions at scale.
