A major study published in The Lancet reports that medicinal cannabis does not effectively treat anxiety, depression, or PTSD. This analysis represents the largest examination of cannabinoid safety and effectiveness across mental health conditions to date. Lead author Dr. Jack Wilson raises serious questions about approving cannabis for these conditions, noting it may delay more effective treatments.

The findings arrive as medicinal cannabis use remains widespread, with approximately 27% of people aged 16-65 in the US and Canada reporting medical use, half specifically for mental health symptoms. While some potential benefits were identified for conditions like cannabis use disorder, autism, insomnia, and Tourette's syndrome, Dr. Wilson emphasized the overall quality of evidence remains low.

The review of 54 randomized controlled trials over 45 years also revealed mixed results for substance use disorders. Cannabis-based treatments showed promise for cannabis dependence but increased cravings in those with cocaine-use disorder. Experts have expressed concerns about limited regulation and uncertainty regarding cannabis products' effectiveness and safety.
