Scientists warn that stalled ships near Strait of Hormuz could trigger a super‑spreader event of invasive species. The conflict that has blocked traffic in this waterway—through which 20% of the world’s oil passes—has left dozens of vessels idling in warm, nutrient‑rich waters, fostering biofouling.

A study in *Biological Invasions* shows that prolonged stationary periods allow microorganisms, algae, and invertebrates to accumulate on hulls. When the ships later depart, the attached organisms are carried worldwide, potentially establishing in new ecosystems. Mario Tamburri, a marine ecologist at the University of Maryland, highlights the difficulty of eradicating established invaders, citing zebra mussels as a classic example.

Current disruptions, including a U.S. naval blockade and Iranian attacks, have left more than 1,500 vessels idle in the Persian Gulf and hundreds anchored in the Gulf of Oman. The combination of extensive biofouling, hardy species adapted to high salinity, and the sheer number of affected ships creates a significant international biosecurity threat.
