SpaceX is lowering the orbits of approximately 4,400 Starlink satellites in 2026, moving them from 342 miles (550 km) to 298 miles (480 km). The plan, announced by VP Michael Nicolls, aims to reduce the time satellites spend in orbit during the upcoming solar minimum, cutting ballistic decay time from years to months.

The move addresses two key risks: slower natural decay during low solar activity and the growing density of objects in Low Earth Orbit. With Starlink comprising two-thirds of all operational satellites, the company wants to ensure failed satellites deorbit quickly, minimizing collision risks with other constellations like China's planned networks.

This adjustment reflects broader challenges in managing the crowded LEO environment. As Solar Cycle 25 progresses toward its minimum around 2030, satellite operators must balance operational needs with orbital sustainability. SpaceX's proactive fleet management sets a precedent for other megaconstellation operators.
