The German Sovereign Tech Agency has announced a significant investment of €508,640 through its Sovereign Tech Fund into the development and stewardship of Flatpak. This two-year initiative, co-organized by Modal and with Para-Real Ltd. as supporting organization, will accelerate Flatpak's evolution as a secure, sandboxed platform for Linux desktop software. Flatpak is the primary application distribution method for image-based operating systems including Fedora Silverblue, open SUSE Aeon, Steam OS, and GNOME OS, and is preferred by major ecosystems such as GNOME, KDE, and elementary.

The investment aims to close critical security and sandboxing gaps, including audio separation, networking isolation, and VPN portals. Development has slowed due to specialized expertise requirements and limited maintainer capacity. The project is led by Sebastian and Adrian, with organizational support from Kateryna and Cade, and includes contractors like Philip Withnall, Julian Sparber, and Dhanuka Warusadura.

It will run through the end of 2027.
