SMPTE has made its entire Standards catalog freely accessible to the global media technology community, removing paywalls from over a century of technical specifications. The move covers all published Standards, Recommended Practices, Engineering Guidelines, and Registered Disclosure Documents, including future releases. These documents have historically required paid access, limiting adoption primarily to large organizations with substantial budgets.

For 110 years, SMPTE Standards enabled interoperability across broadcast, cinema, and digital media infrastructure. President Rich Welsh acknowledged this wasn't a casual decision, citing industry shifts toward IP workflows and AI authenticity challenges. The organization recognized that widespread access becomes essential when facing transformative technological changes that affect the entire ecosystem.

Modernization efforts support the open-access transition, including Git Hub-based version control, structured HTML authoring, and automated publishing pipelines. Major technology companies back the initiative: Apple, Amazon AWS, Disney, Google, Sony, and others serve as Diamond-level Corporate Members. Organizations donating $10,000 or more by December 31, 2026 receive Inaugural Supporter recognition.

Standards Director Steve Llamb emphasized that accessibility strengthens interoperability and reduces misinformation. Developers, educators, and emerging markets can now reference official specifications rather than secondhand interpretations. This foundation shift should accelerate implementation of consistent technical practices across media production, distribution, and archival systems worldwide.
