Secluso: Encrypted Raspberry Pi Security Camera with 5-Minute Setup

Secluso, originally launched as Privastead in 2024, is an open-source home security camera system that keeps video streams off the cloud. The project uses OpenMLS for end-to-end encryption and runs on Raspberry Pi hardware with a custom operating system built from the Yocto project.

Co-founders Ardalan Amiri Sani of UC Irvine and John Kaczman spent the past year and a half refining the codebase. Their Secluso Deploy GUI tool now handles image building, pairing, and relay configuration in under 5 minutes, requiring no technical expertise. Users can flash a personalized OS image and scan a QR code to pair their phone.

The stack emphasizes verifiable security: every component except the iOS app offers reproducible builds, allowing users to confirm binaries match public source code. Mobile apps support Android and iOS with UnifiedPush integration for privacy-preserving notifications. The system implements an untrusted-relay design with forward secrecy and post-compromise security detailed in the project's white paper.

While cloud-based cameras dominate the market, Secluso targets privacy-conscious users willing to self-host. The project ships with disclaimers about cryptographic regulations and provides no guarantees about security effectiveness.
