Sourcegraph is transitioning SCIP, its language-agnostic code indexing protocol, to an independent open governance model after nearly four years. The protocol, which powers essential code navigation features like Go to definition, will now be guided by a Core Steering Committee representing major tech companies including Uber and Meta.

The new structure introduces three governance tiers to ensure protocol stability while promoting innovation. A structured SEP process will govern core protocol schema changes through public debate, while the Core Steering Committee makes final decisions on strategic direction and protocol definitions. Sourcegraph remains committed to using and investing heavily in the project.

Industry backing for the transition includes inaugural committee members Catherine Gasnier from Meta, Jamy Timmermans from Uber, and Michal Kielbowicz from Sourcegraph. The governance model aims to make SCIP an open standard accessible to everyone, with complete rules available online and opportunities for community contribution through GitHub and Discord.
