Rubin Observatory in Chile's Atacama Desert is transforming astronomy with its massive survey capabilities. In just its first year, the observatory has already identified 1,500 new asteroids, including the superfast rotator 2025 MN45—a 700-meter asteroid completing a revolution every 1.88 minutes.

The observatory's 20 terabytes of nightly data will help astronomers track 250,000 Type Ia supernovas annually. This unprecedented dataset could resolve the Hubble tension by providing more precise measurements of cosmic expansion.

Scientists detected the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS using Rubin's capabilities, demonstrating its ability to identify visitors from beyond our solar system. The observatory's detection of imminent impactors could provide days rather than hours of warning time.
