Pushinka: Cold War Gift Dog from Khrushchev to Kennedy

Pushinka (Russian for "Fluffy") was a mixed-breed dog gifted by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev to President John F. Kennedy in 1961. The gesture followed a state dinner in Vienna where Jacqueline Kennedy inquired about Strelka's puppies. Pushinka was the daughter of Strelka, who had orbited Earth aboard Korabl-Sputnik 2 in 1960.

Upon arrival at the White House, Pushinka underwent extensive security screening by the Central Intelligence Agency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She was x-rayed, scanned with a magnetometer, and inspected via sonogram to rule out implanted listening devices. Cleared of any subversive equipment, she settled in under the care of White House electrician and kennel manager Traphes Bryant, who trained her with peanuts to climb a ladder to Caroline Kennedy's playhouse.

Pushinka later mated with the Kennedys' Welsh terrier, Charlie, producing four puppies the president jokingly dubbed "pupniks." The White House received 5,000 public requests for the puppies. Two were given to Midwestern children, while two remained with the family before going to relatives. Pushinka reportedly became "a little nippy" in later years, which Caroline Kennedy attributed to her laboratory upbringing. Descendants of Pushinka are still living in 2024.
