Pentagon Expands Oversight of Stars and Stripes, Limits Content

The Pentagon has released a modernization plan for Stars and Stripes that affirms the publication's independence while expanding Defense Department oversight and introducing new restrictions. An eight-page memo dated March 9 limits wire service use, bars comics and syndicated features, and requires content to align with "good order and discipline."

This marks the first formal explanation since Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced plans to "refocus" the news organization from "woke distractions." The memo transitions the publication from print to digital, moves to uniformed staff overseas, and establishes new content guidelines while maintaining editorial independence from military chain of command.

The changes have sparked concerns from press freedom advocates who say the expanded oversight threatens First Amendment protections. PEN America called the move "a threat to the First Amendment" and warned that increased Pentagon influence over content decisions undermines the newsroom's independence that Congress has long guaranteed.
