The 1954 invention of the Parametron by Eiichi Goto at the University of Tokyo provided a low‑cost, highly stable logic element that used ferrite cores and parametric oscillation instead of vacuum tubes or early transistors. Its simplicity and fault tolerance made it an ideal foundation for early computer design.

In 1957 Goto led the creation of the PC‑1, Japan’s first university‑built stored‑program computer, which employed 4,200 parametrons and began operation on March 26 1958. The PC‑1 outperformed contemporary transistor‑based systems in reliability, offering a clean instruction set, an early interrupt function, and low power consumption.

The Parametron’s affordability and stability attracted industry attention; commercial models sold more than 700 units. Goto received the IRE Browder J. Thompson Memorial Prize in 1961 and the Asahi Prize in 1959 for his work on the PC‑1, cementing his reputation as a pioneering engineer.

Beyond Japan, the Parametron influenced global computing through U.S. patents (US 2,948,818 and US 2,948,819). Goto’s leadership in the Takahasi Laboratory and the PC‑1’s success earned the IEEE Milestone citation, highlighting a lasting legacy in computer history.
