Japan’s patent court has declared one of Red's key Raw‑video patents invalid after a challenge by Panasonic. The court found many claims from the 2008 US filing would have been obvious to a skilled practitioner familiar with existing technology. The decision puts Nikon’s video subsidiary in a position to defend a patent that Nikon had previously deemed invalid. The patent covers a high‑resolution camera that compresses Raw data, mirroring the technology at the heart of past disputes with Sony, Apple and the looming counter‑suits from those companies. Over the years, Nikon resolved similar conflicts by acquiring the company, and some of Red's cinema‑camera expertise has since been incorporated into Nikon’s lineup.

The impact of the ruling is uncertain, as Canon, Panasonic, Sony and Blackmagic Design already produce cameras with internal Raw capture. One possible effect is the removal of license fees owed to Red by users of Apple’s Pro‑Res RAW codec, but Red’s transition from a private firm to being part of Nikon makes it hard to gauge the financial significance. Even a modest cost reduction may not reach end‑users.
