A new open source project called OVMS (Open Vehicle Monitoring System) aims to give electric vehicle owners comprehensive remote access to their car's systems. The platform delivers live telemetry data including battery state of charge, component temperatures, tire pressure, and diagnostic trouble codes directly to smartphones through dedicated Android and iOS applications.

Beyond passive monitoring, OVMS actively alerts owners to critical issues like charging interruptions, battery failures, or potential theft attempts via push notifications. The system also enables remote control capabilities depending on vehicle integration, allowing users to manage charging processes, climate control settings, and engine tuning parameters. A built-in web application interface provides additional access options for users who prefer browser-based control.

Developers gain access to extensive hardware interfaces including three separate CAN bus connections, configurable OBD2 translation capabilities, and DBC decoder functionality. The platform supports reverse engineering workflows and includes a CANopen client implementation. Additional connectivity options encompass SSH access, WebSocket streaming, and TCP-based CAN frame injection and streaming capabilities for advanced integration scenarios.

The open source nature eliminates regional restrictions commonly found in proprietary vehicle systems while giving owners complete control over their personal data collection and storage. Integration with home automation systems through MQTT protocol support extends the platform's utility beyond automotive applications into broader smart home ecosystems.
