The os8088 project, an operating system for the IBM PC XT, has received several new additions as of August 2026. A web browser can now fetch real web pages and render them as text and tables over Ethernet or parallel connections. The browser is 13,889 bytes and runs on a 4.77 MHz 8088 machine. CP/M, the operating system that predated the IBM PC, is now emulated using a Z80 core written in 4,679 lines of C code. Microsoft BASIC, an assembler, and editor all run within a draggable window. A C compiler has also been added, allowing programs to be written more efficiently. A new word processor written in C totals 54,450 bytes but is too large for available memory, requiring two pieces. Microsoft Word 1.1a has been ported, featuring 1990-style menus, on-screen bold and italics display, and .DOC file support in 47,212 bytes. Dual monitor support now spans one desktop across two screens at 1,360 pixels wide. A Frotz interpreter allows Infocom games to run from floppy disk.

All software runs on the original 4.77 MHz 8088 processor. The browser's performance shows that drawing text takes longer than fetching pages over the network.

CP/M emulation required implementing a Z80 processor core since the XT lacks native support.

The C compiler enables faster development compared to assembly language programming.

Microsoft Word 1.1a maintains compatibility with .DOC file formats while fitting into 47KB.

Dual monitor support utilizes separate picture memory addresses typical of PC hardware from that era.

The Frotz interpreter supports Z-machine story formats v1 through v8, enabling classic text adventures.
