OpenMandriva Repo Sabotage Incident

OpenMandriva, a Linux distribution, is recovering from an attempted sabotage by a former contributor, Davide Beatrici. Beatrici, known for his work on the Mumble project, was granted administrative access to OpenMandriva's repository infrastructure, including a migration to his private Git instance, One Dev. This move was met with internal reservations due to concerns about centralized control.

The situation escalated when another individual associated with Beatrici engaged in abusive behavior towards community members, leading to some departures. After a direct attack occurred on OpenMandriva's chat and GitHub, Beatrici was temporarily removed from one chat channel. This action prompted Beatrici and two others to leave the distribution, with Beatrici subsequently deleting years of work from OpenMandriva's GitHub repositories.

Beatrici also published an empty package in the cooker repository, which obsoleted all GNOME and Cosmic packages, potentially impacting users running those desktop environments. OpenMandriva is currently working to restore the deleted code and fix the package conflicts. The distribution shared this incident to warn the open-source community about Beatrici's actions, which they consider criminal, though they have opted not to pursue legal recourse.
