Open Energy Transition and ENTSO-E have launched Open-TYNDP, an open-source framework designed to integrate PyPSA modeling into Europe's Ten-Year Network Development Plan. The collaboration targets the TYNDP's Scenario Building and Cost-Benefit Analysis workflows, aiming to increase transparency in continental energy infrastructure planning.

The project replicates 2024 TYNDP cycle figures to validate the open-source toolchain before aligning with the 2026 cycle. Developers use a soft-fork strategy from PyPSA-Eur, maintaining compatibility while contributing back to upstream repositories. Installation supports both Windows executables and manual pixi-based setups across platforms.

Current development remains active but incomplete, with partial TYNDP 2024 data and ongoing validation. The repository structure includes snakemake workflows for automation, with dedicated channels for stakeholder consultation and community contributions. Users can access Discord support and submit issues through GitHub templates.

Open-TYNDP represents a significant shift toward reproducible energy planning methodologies. By open-sourcing transmission system modeling previously handled by proprietary tools, the project could establish transparency standards for infrastructure investment decisions affecting billions in European energy spending.
