OmniDrive Firmware Enables Blu-ray Drives to Rip Retro Console Games

Retro gaming enthusiasts now have a streamlined way to digitize their physical game collections. OmniDrive firmware unlocks the ability for compatible Blu-ray drives to read proprietary disc formats from classic consoles, eliminating the need for console modifications that previously made game preservation a technical nightmare.

The firmware works exclusively with drives featuring the MediaTek MT1959 chipset, including models from Asus, LG, Buffalo, and Verbatim. Supported consoles span the original Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, and Wii, though PlayStation 3/4/5 and Xbox One titles remain encrypted and inaccessible despite readable media.

A recent demonstration showed the process using Media Preservation Frontend, an open-source dumping tool that successfully extracted an Xbox 360 game to an ISO file through the modified Blu-ray drive. This represents a dramatic improvement over earlier methods requiring hardware modifications to the consoles themselves.

For preservation-focused gamers, this firmware provides the most accessible path yet to back up aging disc libraries. However, verifying drive compatibility before installation is essential, as flashing unsupported hardware will permanently damage the device.
