An international scientific team, including researchers from Yale, has identified a new species of Colobus monkey, named 'Likweli', in the high forest canopies of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This marks the fifth new African monkey species discovered in the last 75 years. The species, scientifically known as Colobus congoensis, is a rare and elusive primate, recognized by its small, black coat with distinctive orange-cream patches around its mouth and nose. Researchers recommend 'Likweli' as its common name.

Evidence from physical traits, genetics, and vocalizations confirms Likweli's distinctiveness from other Colobus species. The discovery highlights the critical importance of protecting the biodiversity of Lomami National Park, an 8,874-square-kilometer area. The research, published in PLOS One, involved collaboration with the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation and other institutions.

Likweli inhabit dense forest canopies, making them difficult to spot. Observations from 2018 to 2022 recorded them in small groups within Lomami National Park and its buffer zone. Due to its limited range, small population, and threats from hunting and habitat encroachment, researchers recommend Likweli be designated as endangered, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts in the region.
