NASA Selects Relativity Space for 2028 Mars Aeolus Mission

NASA selected Relativity Space to build and launch a Mars orbiter mission called Aeolus, potentially beating SpaceX to the Red Planet. The company, acquired by former Google executive Eric Schmidt in 2023 after fundraising struggles, will construct both the spacecraft and rocket for the 2028 launch. This contract follows the agency's public-private partnership model used for ISS cargo flights and lunar landers.

The Aeolus spacecraft will carry four instruments to provide daily global monitoring of Mars' atmospheric dust, wind, and temperature. NASA officials say this data will improve safety for future landers and human missions. The agency handles scientific payload while private companies supply cost-effective infrastructure, stretching NASA's budget across ambitious projects.

Relativity faces significant technical hurdles. Their Terran 1 rocket failed during a 2023 test flight, and the larger Terran R hasn't reached the launchpad yet. Schmidt took majority control after the company stumbled on fundraising, installing himself as CEO. The mission timeline leaves little room for delays in completing both spacecraft and launch vehicle.

This partnership creates an unexpected rivalry. SpaceX has never launched its own Mars mission despite Elon Musk's long-standing Martian ambitions. If Aeolus succeeds, Schmidt could achieve what Musk hasn't - the first private spacecraft reaching Mars. The outcome remains uncertain given Relativity's unproven track record.
