A mysterious donor has gifted Osaka 21kg of gold bars worth 560 million yen ($3.6 million) to repair the city's deteriorating water infrastructure. The anonymous contribution, announced by Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama, comes as Osaka faces critical challenges with aging pipes that have caused over 90 water leaks in 2024.

Osaka, Japan's third-largest city with nearly three million residents, has struggled to address its crumbling water system. More than 20% of Japan's water pipes have exceeded their 40-year service life, creating safety hazards and costly repairs. The gold bars arrived last November, following a previous anonymous donation of 500,000 yen for municipal waterworks.

The timing is significant given recent disasters. A massive sinkhole in Saitama Prefecture last year killed a truck driver when corroded sewage pipes ruptured. Budget constraints have slowed nationwide pipe replacement efforts, making this unexpected windfall particularly valuable for addressing critical infrastructure needs.
