After buying an Open Stick for $10 on Hacker News, the author describes it as a fun novelty project that delivers 512 MB RAM (about 450 MB usable), four ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores at 1 GHz, 4 GB eMMC flash, and 150 Mbit/s Wi-Fi with a 4G modem and GPS. Passively cooled and completely silent, the device runs Debian with systemd and Podman. The homelab supports several useful services: Cast Sponsor Skip Ad Guard Home (a DNS blocker that blocks 60% of queries), Zeroclaw (an AI agent for Telegram, email, and WhatsApp monitoring that uses ~3 MB idle), and Cloudflare Tunnel for secure external access.
These tools provide a powerful home server experience for under $10 with minimal power consumption and zero noise. The author recommends these tools for self-hosting enthusiasts seeking a budget-friendly, quiet setup.
