Matt Mullenweg posted on Automattic’s Slack that he is back in control as CEO of the WordPress.com parent company, according to a screenshot seen by TechCrunch and confirmed by multiple employee sources. The post came days after Automattic’s board voted to oust him as CEO for unknown reasons. Automattic has not confirmed if his statement is true. Mullenweg said a blog post was forthcoming, but it was about buying a houseboat.

On Wednesday, Mullenweg told his team via Slack that board members had “conspired” by voting to put him on paid leave. CFO Mark Davies was made interim CEO. A spokesperson confirmed Mullenweg was on leave and Davies was interim CEO.

Early Friday, Mullenweg shared: “(Don’t call it a comeback…) Howdy everybody! Happy to announce the board is back in agreement, and I’m in control of Automattic.” He also linked to LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out.” No board confirmation has been heard, and Davies’ Slack account was deactivated. Mullenweg had removed all Slack admins and posted oddly about being a “pirate.” Asked if he was trolling, he replied, “I’m not a troll I’m a pirate, obviously.”

Mullenweg’s posts on Reddit and X suggested Silver Lake, majority owner of WP Engine, was involved in a plan to “destroy” his life. On Friday, he posted on X, “Boards are never boring,” with a laughing/crying emoji.
