MSG Internal Dossier Tracks Facial‑Recognition Critics

Madison Square Garden compiled a SharePoint document listing activists who publicly opposed its facial recognition system. The file, titled “Facial Recognition Activists.docx,” contains bios, social handles, follower counts and quoted remarks from three opponents: Evan Greer, Albert Fox Cahn and EFF litigator Adam Schwartz. A 45 GB cache from a recent hack exposed the dossier to the public.

The dossier, dated Dec 23 2022, shows MSG employees could access detailed profiles of critics, including screenshots of Greer’s tweets urging New York officials to ban the technology. Privacy advocates argue the file demonstrates how corporations can weaponize surveillance tools against dissenters, echoing earlier reports that MSG’s system has blocked lawyers and even a shirt‑designer critical of owner Jim Dolan.

EFF’s Schwartz called the breach a “wake‑up call” for companies that deploy biometric monitoring. The incident adds pressure on MSG, which has used the technology since 2018 to identify patrons and deny entry based on a range of criteria. The revelation underscores growing scrutiny of private‑sector surveillance and raises immediate questions about data governance at large venues.
