Microdot Tattoos: Painless, Needle-Free Permanent Ink

Cipher X has developed a novel method for permanent tattoos using a dissolving patch filled with microneedles, offering a pain-free alternative for those with needle or blood phobias. This "microdot" technology replaces traditional tattoo machines with a handheld tool that applies a patch, depositing pigment into the skin as microscopic points dissolve over 10 to 15 minutes.

Developed by materials scientist Ferdinand Kohle, inspired by his own phobias, the system translates digital artwork into a fixed pattern of pigment-carrying microdots. The patch adheres to the skin, with the microneedles delivering ink in a prearranged design. While the initial mark may appear faint, it deepens over the following two days.

Cipher X, co-founded by Kohle and Karl-Anton Harms, aims to make permanent body art more accessible. The company received a Red Dot Best of the Best award in 2026 for its applicator and is exploring applications beyond tattoos, including cosmetic treatments and medical marking. Currently available through trained practitioners, home application is a future goal.
