Mawlynnong Bans Sunday Tourists to Reclaim Village Life

Mawlynnong, a village of 600 in India's Meghalaya state, banned day-trippers on Sundays starting January 2026 to reclaim "real village life." Known as Asia's cleanest village since 2003, it draws up to 1,000 tourists each Saturday.

The predominantly Christian community, led by committee member Precious Khongdup, imposed the ban to prioritize Sunday worship over tourism income. Resident Festival Kharrymba said it allows time for church and family. Even before the ban, most businesses closed Sundays.

Tourism transformed Mawlynnong from isolated thatched homes to concrete houses, but littering incidents prompted the break. Overnight guests are exempt. Some tourists complain, but visitors like Vijaya Debnath respect the villagers' dedication to cleanliness.
