Make Logos Brighter on HDR Screens

Certain logos began standing out as noticeably brighter on LinkedIn due to a subtle technical addition. By embedding an ISO 21496-1 gain map into standard JPEG files, specific colors can shine up to 7.5× brighter than #FFFFFF on compatible displays like newer MacBook Pros. This enhancement remains invisible on SDR screens while preserving the original image for non-HDR environments.

A free browser-based utility allows users to upload logos, select glowing colors, and download the enhanced file instantly. Light, near-white elements on dark backgrounds produce the strongest effect, peaking around +2.9 stops or roughly 1,500 nits. Dark colors generally wash out when boosted, making high-contrast designs ideal for this format.

The technique also extends to typography. Using CSS background-clip: text, designers can render actual glyphs over an HDR gain-map image, effectively bypassing current CSS limitations that cap color brightness at white. Supported primarily in Chrome, Safari, and LinkedIn’s ecosystem, this method safely degrades to standard white on incompatible browsers without breaking layout.
