A new Low Power FM radio station called KPBJ is launching in the east San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles on 95.9FM. The station operates as a freeform community platform where anyone can host a show without curatorial oversight, similar to public access television or college radio.

Currently broadcasting via internet stream, KPBJ has onboarded about 60 shows ranging from music to talk programs. All content is pre-recorded while organizers fundraise for studio equipment. The station plans to broadcast with 100W ERP from a 1500ft elevation site in the Verdugos mountains, requiring off-grid solar power with battery backup.

The technical infrastructure was built using Haskell, NixOS, Terraform, and HTMX, with plans to sync the station to the transmit site using 802.11ah wireless technology. Managed by a 501c3 non-profit, KPBJ is actively seeking fundraising to cover equipment and build-out costs for the transmitter site.
