Two senior Iranian Health Ministry officials told TIME that as many as 30,000 people may have been killed during protests on January 8 and 9 alone. This internal figure far surpasses the official toll of 3,117 announced by regime hardliners and activist tallies of around 5,459 confirmed deaths. The scale overwhelmed state resources, exhausting body bag stocks and forcing the use of semi-trailers to transport the dead.

The killing occurred during a peak in nationwide demonstrations, which began in late December over economic collapse and escalated into calls for regime change. Authorities responded by shutting down internet and communications, deploying rooftop snipers and heavy machine guns. A German-Iranian surgeon's hospital data showed 30,304 deaths recorded over the two-day period, though this excludes military hospital casualties and areas beyond the inquiry's reach.

Experts on mass violence note the only historical parallel for such a concentrated slaughter is the Holocaust-era Babyn Yar massacre. The figures, though unverified by TIME, suggest a state response of unprecedented severity. The emergence of these internal numbers underscores the severe stakes for both the Iranian populace and a regime facing its most significant challenge since 1979.
