A new IP crawling project called IP Crawl has mapped thousands of unsecured webcams streaming publicly on the internet, creating what researchers describe as a 'living atlas' of exposed surveillance devices. The tool scans internet infrastructure and catalogs accessible camera feeds, revealing the widespread nature of poorly secured IoT devices connected through major telecommunications providers.

The data shows significant exposure across multiple continents, with Comcast appearing most frequently in the United States and major carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile Austria, and Telecom Italia hosting numerous accessible streams. Some locations report up to 16 exposed cameras, while others show 5-9 devices per ISP. The mix of LIVE and SNAPSHOT statuses indicates varying levels of active streaming and accessibility.

This discovery raises serious privacy and security concerns for both individuals and businesses using these cameras. Organizations like KDDI CORPORATION and Korea Telecom also appear in the dataset, suggesting the problem spans global telecommunications infrastructure. The project highlights how default configurations and inadequate network security leave surveillance systems vulnerable to unauthorized access.

Researchers can use this atlas to identify at-risk installations and warn owners about potential privacy violations. The scale of exposure demonstrates that securing IoT devices remains a persistent challenge across residential and commercial deployments worldwide.
