A developer has created Mines.fyi, an interactive Leaflet visualization mapping all 6,608 mines across the United States using public data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The tool provides detailed breakdowns by mine type, commodity, state, and operator, with Texas leading at 626 sites followed by Pennsylvania and California.

The visualization reveals significant industry concentration, with Vulcan Construction Materials operating 173 sites and employing 3,579 workers. Surface mines dominate the landscape at 5,779 sites compared to 330 underground operations, while commodities range from coal and metal to sand, gravel, and industrial minerals. The data shows 6,608 active mines with 5,993 classified as metal/non-metal operations versus 615 coal mines.

Built using MSHA's public datasets, the project transforms complex mining data into an accessible geographic interface. Users can explore individual mine details including operator information, commodity type, and operational status. The tool demonstrates how open government data can be repurposed for public insight, providing transparency into an industry that directly employs hundreds of thousands of workers across diverse geographic regions.
